An Interview & GIVEAWAY with L.J. Garland & Debbie Gould...

Blurb: Seven years ago, Abby Montgomery survived a brutal attack. Now she is ready to put her pain in the past and move on with her life. The problem is, one by one the men in her life are being viciously murdered.

The detective assigned to the case, Ethan Parker, has demons of his own to hide. As the danger gets closer to Abby, so does Ethan. But can they get past his secrets before the killer gets to them? Sometimes the sins of the mind are more depraved than the sins of the heart.

Questions:
1.      How long have you been an author?

LJ: I’ve been writing since I was a kid. But I became a published author about five years ago.
Debbie:  About ten years for me.
2.      What is your favourite genre?

LJ: I love reading a variety of genres. As far as writing, I like suspense, time travel, sci-fi, military, and paranormal.
Debbie: Romantic Suspense with a military theme. Both reading and writing paranormal would be a close second though.
3.      If someone hasn't read any of your work, what book would you recommend they start with and why?

LJ: Hmm…I love Sins of the Mind, but I think our pararescuemen series would be good, too. Hunky military guys, saving the world and falling for their perfect heroine.

Debbie: Ditto! LOL

LJ: The series starts with Second Chance then In My Sights and the one we’re almost finished with is Explosive Conditions. We’re planning 2-3 more after that to finish up all the team members.

4.      What is the biggest surprise you’ve discovered about the writing process?
Debbie: How fickle it can be.
LJ: Definitely. You can’t please everyone…so please yourself. I try to please Deb, but it’s darn near impossible. The woman’s an ogre! …or is that what she says about me when I don’t get my morning coffee?? Hmm. Can’t remember.
5.      Can you tell us about one of your current works in progress?
Debbie: We have several irons in the fire, include a 5 book series that will run the gambit of suspense, paranormal, SciFi and anything else we can dream up.
LJ: Oh yeah! I’m very excited about that series.
6.      Name one thing readers would be surprised to know about you.

LJ: I’m a helicopter pilot.
Debbie: Ummmm, I believe in the boogieman.

LJ: Debbie…no one is surprised about that! LOL I believe aliens are here on Earth living among us, and no one is surprised by that either. Now, if you’d said you’d killed the boogieman and cooked him up for dinner for your sweetie…well, that would be surprising!
7.      Name your top three writing goals?

1. Not to smack one another upside the head more than once during a story plot planning session.

2. Not to make our heroines pathetic like the slutty chick who, right after hearing on the news there's a psychopath in her neighborhood, wanders down the dark hallway with nothing but a spatula while she investigates a strange noise and then runs out into the woods in her bra and panties and hides behind a skinny tree.

LJ: Wait, what happened to her clothes?

Debbie: Who knows?

3. But seriously? Our number one goal is to write stories that readers can't put down.

If you had a warning label, what would it say?

LJ: Hey Debbie, for fun, why don’t we come up with warning labels for each other?

Debbie: Okay….

LJ: For you, hmm… Take as directed. Highly addictive substance.

Debbie: Have you been talking to Kevin? For you I’d just put a skull and cross bones on the label. HAHAHAHAAHAHA

LJ: Wait, is that because I shoot assault rifles?

Debbie: If that’s how you want to take it.

1.      If you had the chance to meet one of your characters privately, who would it be and what would you do?
Debbie: Hands down, Elliot from Sins of the Mind, and I’d punch him in the nose!

LJ: Well, guess I’d have to meet Elliot, too, so I could hold you back. He’s a lawyer…he’d sue you!
What is the naughtiest thing you’ve ever done?
Debbie: I’m pretty tame, so I’d have to say going to a dinner party with no underwear on under my skirt. It was a long skirt, so no great risk there, lol.

LJ: Me, too. LOL Except I took mine off at the restaurant and then handed them to my hubby at the table to hold for me.

  4. What a great interview! Debbie and LJ obviously get along so well, and I love their sense of humor. LJ sounds like a kick butt woman, and I anticipate some of her comes through in the heroines she writes. My dad was also a helicopter pilot and hubby is in the military so naturally the affinity for assault rifles is there. Debbie sounds more like me, lol. I can't believe you guys divulged one of your naughtiest things you've ever done! Kudos to you LJ ;)

Both of you are new to me, but the interview and your book blurb were so great, I've added Sins of the Mind to my reading list. Thank you for bringing new authors to my attention, Jennifer, and thank you ladies for the chance to win your book.

  10. Fabulous interview. I'm probably too late for the bookaway, but because I really want it I'll leave my email Liza2write at yahoo.com.

So why are people who write books together so funny crazy? Did you drive each other to the brink of madness, or did you bond through your common grounds of mental illness? (I probably shouldn't have asked that if I wanted to win the book...)

  11. This is going to be such an exciting read I think. Thanks for the wonderful interview.
