An Interview and a GIVEAWAY with Alexa Bourne

I'd like to welcome fellow Decadent Publishing author Alexa Bourne to Labelle Books. Today, Alexa answers a few interview questions, tells us a little more about her new book, Her Highland Champion, and has offered one lucky commenter a chance to win a copy of it.
So you all know the drill, leave a comment with your email address, and if you haven't done so already we'd love for you to follow or subscribe to the blog. Easy peasy!
Alexa will announce her winner on Saturday, September 1 in the comments section. Good luck!

Welcome, Alexa, how long have you been an author?
ALEXA: Officially, I signed my 1st contract in December 2011, but I’ve been writing toward publication since I joined RWA in 1999. That’s when I considered myself a professional.

Congratulations on your success. So tell us, what's your favourite genre?
ALEXA: Without a doubt romantic suspense!
If someone hasn't read any of your work, what book would you recommend they start with and why?
ALEXA: I would suggest my 2nd book Fractured Paradise, which should be out within the next month or so. Yes, I love Champion, but Paradise is my favorite of my novellas. It’s my favorite because I wrote about my mom’s hometown in England. The story started out at a way to help me get over my grandmother’s death, but then it became about honoring my heritage.

Oh, please keep me updated. I love reading books that have meaning and just knowing that it helped you heal while honoring your heritage makes me want to check it out even before I've read the blurb or seen the cover. LOL, I'm such a sucker for the emotional stuff.

What is the biggest surprise you’ve discovered about the writing process?
ALEXA: Promotion is overwhelming! I love visiting blogs and running contests and participating in blog hops, but I had no idea the balance between actual writing and promoting was so hard to find.
*chuckles* I totally agree. Can you tell us about one of your current works in progress?
ALEXA: At the moment, I’m working on my very first historical romance! I was asked to write a short story set in historical Scotland. It’s a tall order for someone who has never written outside of her own lifetime, but I’m having fun with it!

I love historicals...*sigh*

Okay, now name one thing readers would be surprised to know about you.
ALEXA: I write the rough drafts of my work on notebook paper. As the stories get closer to being ready for submission, I spend more time on the computer.
Name your top three writing goals?
ALEXA: To complete 3 more novellas in 2013 in addition to at least 2 full-length books.
To write full-time with no “day job”.
To someday write a contemporary series about someone solving crimes in Edinburgh. (Of course, I’d like to do some research there too!)
Those are some great goals. Now on to a couple of fun questions. If you had a warning label, what would it say?
ALEXA: Beware- Subject babbles incessantly when excited...or angry.

If you had the chance to meet one of your characters privately, who would it be and what would you do?
ALEXA: I would love to meet Ian MacKenzie! He makes an appearance in both Her Highland
Champion and Fractured Paradise to help the main characters. In my head, he is so sexy and mysterious. I tried to make my 3rd story (Simple Treasures, coming out around the holidays) Ian’s story, but he quickly let me know he’s not ready to settle down yet. And what would I do? I’d so let him do whatever he wanted with me!

*grins* What is the naughtiest thing you’ve ever done?
ALEXA: Naughty? Nothing. I was the sweet and innocent one....Okay, not buying that? How about going home with a guy I’d met a few drinks before....and then finding out the next day he’d been wanted for questioning.......
Ah, the bad boy experience.... *winks*
I'd like to thank Alexa for joining us today. For those of you who would like to learn more about Alexa and her work she can be reached through these links:
ALEXA: Thank you so much for having me stop by! I appreciate your support!

BLURB:
Heather Winchester leads a charming life. With good friends, a beautiful flat in one of the most amazing cities in the world, and a promising future once she finishes her Ph.D., she is finally pursuing her own dreams instead of catering to everyone else’s…except she doesn’t remember any of it.
Malcolm Fraser has returned to his Highland village to forget his failings as a professional bodyguard. Believing he could just lose himself in the mundane activities of running his bed & breakfast, he finds a woman’s lifeless body by the loch instead….

Captivated by Heather as she regains her memory, Malcolm is thrown into the line of duty. As danger comes knocking on their doors, will he be strong enough to love her and keep her safe?

EXCERPT:

She turned to the bedside. A man stood there dressed in dark green sweats, wih both hands clenched around the silver bedside bar. He was handsome, with light eyes, dark hair cropped close to his head, and a firm jaw. It was his hands, though. They drew her attention. Clean skin, defined knuckles, large fingers. Hands rough enough from a hard day's physical labor, and yet, she imagined, gentle enough to caress the afternoon's sufferings away.

"It's good to see you awake." He smiled. "You gave us all quite a fright."
Okay, the Scottish accent drew her attention, too. At once it both melted away some of her fears and sparked a whirlwind of questions. "Where am I?" Her throat scratched like sandpaper.
"St. Catherine's Hospital."
She swallowed hard."Where is that?"
"Fort William." He reached for something on the table by her bed and brought back a plastic cup with a straw. "Here."

"Thank you." The warm water coated her sore vocal cords. She handed the cup back to him.

Wait a minute. Fort William? The only Fort William she knew was in Scotland. "I don't understand. How did I get here?" Ignoring the aches in her body, she pressed palms to the sheets on each side of her and pushed herself up. The blanket fell away from her chest and a new chill surrounded her. "What's going on?"

  6. Paisley, LOL! If I make it to Edinburgh for researching and writing the books, you'll be more than welcome to visit!

Vonda, it's funny. I hadn't really thought about it until Jennifer asked me about my 3 dreams. Since my dream of being published came true, I had to add another. I shocked myself with how quickly and fully that Edinburgh series came into my mind.

  11. The only time I've written a novel on paper was when I went to Australia and New Zealand for four months I wrote 3 novels while there and not one of them has ever been translated into a computer. Turns out I can't read my own writing.

    True but sad story,
    Liza
